Week 2 - Perfect Pets

This week will focus on a range of texts and film clips around pets. When following links online, parents should monitor that their children are remaining on that page only and are keeping safe online.

Day 1 - Explain to your child that this week is all about pets. Watch the trailer of the film Secret Life of Pets to talk about what pets do when their owners are at work.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-80SGWfEjM

Read and write a diary about their own pet in sentences. This could be in a little book, similar to the story about Pip. Encourage the use of ‘and’ in their sentences to extend, e.g. Sam likes to eat his food and drink his water.

Day 2 - Watch and join in with the song I Have a Pet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWepfJ-8XU0

Draw pictures of the pets (could use a video to copy drawings) e.g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8oTyNH0bQk

Write sentences about the pets and the noise they make e.g. I have a bird and it goes tweet. I have a mouse and it goes squeak.

Day 3 - Watch the story The Perfect Pet being read aloud https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDk7rdE9-LY

Write some full sentences in the form of an advert using the labels created, e.g. Dog wanted! The dog must have… and be able to … Check full stops and capital letters.

Day 4 - Watch some videos on different types of animals or their favourite pets, e.g. Interesting facts about cats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPf0X0QclXE

penguin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIo1giiTXCs

Gorilla: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieS2DsrDh18

Choose an animal to write about. Watch the chosen animal video again. Whilst watching, pause and allow your child to write down words/ phrases/ sentences about the information they have heard.

Day 5 - Watch How to Take Care of a Pet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eexIqdIdFOw

Talk to your child about their pet or one they have learnt about and what it would need to be looked after. Use action words (verbs) such as: take, brush, clean, make, play etc. to start your sentences. Ask your child to write a set of instructions for someone to follow if they were to look after their own pet or one of choice. They could be set out as follows: How to look after a __ What you will need: 1. 2. 3. 4. etc.

Hairy Maclary Planning

Day 1 - Read the book and write a sentence about why you think this dog s called Hairy Maclary

Day 2 - Read the book and write a sentence about your favourite dogs and why they like them. Encourage the use of 'and' in their sentences.

Day 3 - Read the book and use time fronted adverbials (first, then, next, after that) to write where Hairy Maclary has been and what he was up to.

Day 4 - Watch the youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKG89O05K5A) and look at the different types of dogs. Give the dogs different types of names (for example Pat the Poodle) and then write some descriptive sentences about them using adjectives (describing words).
