Ightenhill Primary School

To be the best that we can be.

What are we learning?

Autumn 1

Phonics

We follow the Read, Write, Inc. scheme. The children get taught a 45 minute phonics session each day. The children learn in small groups set to their ability. They will get assessed each half term to allow them to progress through the scheme.

The order of the scheme colours are: red, green, purple, pink, orange, yellow, blue, grey, literacy

English

We are currently reading Meerkat Mail. Within this story we will look at securing our knowledge of full stops and capital letters. We will also develop our knowledge of verbs and begin to make conscious choices about the verbs that we use. We will begin to embed our understanding of adjectives as we retell the story through a story map. Once we have written the first story, we will then innovate our own version by changing the main character. We will then go on to write informal letters. To write our letters, we will become familiar with different sentence types such as statements, questions and exclamations.

History

We will be learning about the Great Fire of London. We will be able to put the events in chronological order. The children will know key facts such as, where the fire started, who started it and how it was put out. We will then look at how London changed as a result of the fire.

DT

We will be making fire engines. We will look at axels and axel holders. We will investigate wheel shape and size. Using this information, we will design two fire engines and then we will conduct a vote for which we should build. We will decorate a box, create an axel holder and fix wheels.

Science

In science, we will be focusing on Animals and their habitats.

Just before Christmas, we will read a book called 'Dear Father Christmas' and use this as another opportunity to practise the skills we have learnt.

We are looking at our locality. We will first of all look at Burnley and the landmarks we have here. We will look at towns and countryside. We will move on to look at the United Kingdom and be able to know the four countries and seas that surround it. We will then look at the continents of the world and oceans. We will discuss the size difference between towns, countries, continents.

In art we are learning all of the skills required to sketch successfully. We will discuss key words such as tone and shade. We will practise how to hold our pencil lightly and not create a solid line to form our object.
